Why DVS is important?
The Direct Vision Standard mandates that big trucks weighing over 12 tonnes need a special permit to go into Greater London. This rule applies to trucks from the UK and from other countries too. The main idea behind this standard is to make sure that truck drivers can see clearly around their vehicle, reducing blind spots and making it safer for people walking or cycling nearby.
Rating System and Compliance
Vehicles are given star ratings from 0 to 5 based on how well their drivers can see around them when they're made. It's worth mentioning that any extra safety equipment added later isn't considered when giving these ratings. To enter London, vehicles need at least a 1-star rating, but from October 2024, they'll need a 3-star rating, which is stricter.
If heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) don't meet the 1-star requirement (or the 3-star requirement after October 2024), they have to install the DVS Safe System. This system adds extra tools to help drivers see better, similar to what's required by FORS and CLOCS. These tools warn drivers about people in blind spots, making the roads safer. It's important to remember that using the DVS Safe System doesn't change a vehicle's star rating, but it does allow it to enter Greater London.
Know your star rating
Until October 2024, vehicles rated from 1 to 5 stars can apply for a permit, but you still need to fill out an application. If your vehicle is rated 1 or 2 stars, the permit remains valid until October 25, 2024. After this date, you'll need to make sure your vehicle complies with the DVS Progressive Safe System and reapply for a permit, providing evidence of the system's installation.
For vehicles rated from 3 to 5 stars, the permit is valid until October 25, 2030, or for 10 years (whichever is later). If your vehicle has a 0-star rating but complies with the DVS Safe System, you'll get a permit until October 25, 2024. After this deadline, you'll need to update your devices to meet the requirements of the DVS Progressive Safe System to renew your permit.
